Whenever someone asks me whether their nonprofit needs risk management, I’m always tempted to respond with a scenario. How about this one.

You go to work Monday morning and find that your computers won’t allow access into any of your nonprofit’s data. Everyone else is refused access, too. All you get is a screen that demands ransom for your data to be unlocked.

But you’re okay with that, because you made plans ahead of time.

Three questions about this scenario:

  1. Would any of you reading this blog post be able to react with such confidence right now?
  2. If not, what should you do today so that if this happened three months from now, you’d be prepared? Finally,
  3. What else should you be thinking about doing right now in other areas of your nonprofit?

That’s what risk management is all about: making a commitment to manage the uncertainty you face.
